Aerodynamics and Calibration

We work in the rigorous definition of air speed at our wind tunnel, which allows us to calibrate and test equipment efficiently.

Air movement is determinant in several industries and services. Whether it’s the wind that drives a wind turbine’s rotor or the ventilation of air inside a building, the anemometers and Pitot tubes that measure air speed must be properly calibrated, in order to ensure the quality of measurement results.

In order to respond to companies that identify this need, we have invested in an Aerodynamics and Calibration Laboratory, duly accredited by the Portuguese Accreditation Institute.

Calibration of air speed measurement equipment
We perform calibration and test of airspeed measurement equipment. At our Aerodynamics and Calibration Laboratory we are capable of testing and calibrating the following equipment examples:
- Cup anemometer
- Thermo-Anemometer
- Pitot probes, S and L type
- Velocity probe
- Propeller anemometer
- Sonic anemometer
- Wind vane
The standard IEC 61400-12-1 contains the necessary procedure for the calibration of anemometers and, together with ISO 10780, ISO 3966, EPA methods make the main technical procedures for the calibration of the equipment.

Airspeed measurement is a relevant procedure in:
- Wind energy - for resource characterisation
- Stack monitoring - for the gas flow determination
- Ventilation and air quality in buildings
- Meteorology - the knowledge of atmospheric conditions
- Infrastructures and sites exposed to wind-induced loading

Equipment testing - Verification of equipment performance according to EN ISO 16911-1
The wind tunnel is fitted with a standard port for stack sampling laboratories. It serves to verify the sampling probes compliance to requirements established in EN ISO 16911-1:2013 Stationary source emissions — Manual and automatic determination of velocity and volume flow rate in ducts).

At our wind tunnel it’s possible to perform the following tests:
- Linearity, lack-of-fit of air speed measurement
- Repeatability and sensitivity
- Measurement error due to misalignment of sensor to flow
These tests allow our clients to evaluate and qualify their equipment for sampling and tests accordingly to standard EN ISO 16911-1.

At Aerodynamics and Calibration Laboratory it’s also possible to perform the technical components of inter-laboratory comparison of test laboratories.

Equipment testing - verification of anemometers used as safety equipment
An anemometer is a safety equipment when workers and equipment safety depends on wind loading or if wind speed can have an impact in the operation of equipment or infrastructure. We verify equipment from:
- Mobile cranes
- Tower cranes
- Other load moving equipment
Due to its experience, INEGI is a competent entity according to (DL 50/2005) for the verification of anemometers as safety equipment, starting with the accredited calibration at a wind tunnel.

Aerodynamics and Calibration Laboratory can also answer requests perform industrial aerodynamic experimental tests. The following tests are highlighted:
