Bosch and University of Porto team up with INEGI to make cities safer with IoT (Internet of Things) technology

13 September 2021
Investigate and develop an ecosystem of new complementary products and services, capable of contributing to the safety of people, as well as the systems and subsystems that interact with them in cities. All using new technologies, particularly those that make up the Internet of Things (IoT) universe.

This is the main objective of the ‘Safe Cities - Innovation to Build Safe Cities’ project, through which Bosch Security Systems and the University of Porto want to take a step forward in meeting the security needs of the contemporary world.

According to Bosch Security Systems, located in the industrial area of Ovar, the aim is to "respond and anticipate the challenges facing modern urban societies, increasingly dependent on technological evolution in the fields of sensing, data transmission, storage and remote intelligent processing, to meet needs for security, privacy, comfort and efficiency”.

In this project, which represents an investment of 16 million euros, INEGI was called upon to contribute to the development of intelligent urban sensors, thanks to the recognition of the Institute's experience and skills in the areas of image analysis, structural monitoring, as well as mechanical design and electromechanical components, aiming at improving the products and their production process.

"We are developing technology on several fronts, which will support the development of an extensive range of innovative products, processes and services for Bosch. For example, we have developed a structural monitoring system that measures displacement fields in structures such as bridges, which will be tested in a real environment, on the Canelas railway bridge, in Estarreja. Another example is the development of an innovative system for image stabilization in surveillance cameras, which will compensate for the harmful effects of vibration on the quality of the image obtained", explains Paulo Tavares, responsible for the project at INEGI.

Currently, Bosch Security Systems develops and manufactures a set of sensor systems for video surveillance, intrusion detection, fire detection and voice alarm, and is dedicated to the design and implementation of complex projects based on the systems it develops.

Expected to close at the end of 2022, the results of this project will allow the company to maintain its leadership in the world market for smart solutions for safe cities, thanks to the knowledge and capacity acquired, as well as new solutions and differentiating products, which will allow it to strengthen its export capacity.

The ‘Safe Cities’ project is a co-promotion led by Bosch Security Systems with the collaboration of the University of Porto – Rectory, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science, co-financed by COMPETE 2020 and Portugal 2020, through the European Regional Development Fund. INEGI assumes the role of a subcontracted partner.
