INEGI’s researcher and former president Joaquim Silva Gomes has launched a book on mechanics of materials and linear structures

"Mechanics of Materials and Linear Structures. Theory and Applications." is the title of the new book authored by Joaquim Silva Gomes, researcher and former president of INEGI, a position he held for over 12 years, which is edited by Quântica Editora - Livros Técnicos Especiais.

This publication presents techniques and methods for the study and design of linear structural elements, namely bars in tension and compression, torsion of shafts and bending of beams. It covers fundamental concepts of elasticity theory and explores specific structural engineering problems, such as axial load and torsion of linear parts, stresses and strains of bending beams, and statically indeterminate problems and buckling.

Joaquim Silva Gomes, who is also President of the Board of the Portuguese Association for Experimental Stress Analysis (APAET) and Full Professor (Emeritus) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), includes in his book five appendices with tables and useful information to the designer, namely on the properties of construction materials, mathematical formulas, properties of flat areas, bending of beams and laminated steel profiles.
